Open Letter to the Podcasting Community
The following open letter was released by the Podcasting Specification Working Group (PodSpecWG) on MAY 11, 2005.
I was doing some work with the Internet Archive today, and stumbled across what I think is a fairly new concept, the video game speed run.
In theatre, a speed run is a run through of the play at high speed. This gives the actors a chance to see the play in a compressed timeline, highlighting plot points, and getting a better handle on flow and pace. It also double checks blocking (cast movements on stage), prop presets and scene transitions.
Well a video game speed run is similar, in that it’s a video recording of the fastest path through to completion of a game. This is basically a visual representation of what’s called a “walk through”, the same thing, but as a textual description.
If you do a search on the Internet Archive for speed run, you can check some of them out. Also if you stick speed run into Google, the top results are now video game speed runs as well. And finally, it looks like Wikipedia now prefers the video game definition for speed run as well.
Today Cindy and I went shopping for props for our impro show Scared Scriptless, so we headed over to a place called Reverse Garbage. In the end we didn’t really get much from there, but interesting place none the less.
Recently I’ve tried to cut down my focus on video production values, caring less about framing, lighting, editing, sound etc., just shooting footage from the hip so to speak, and doing a quick edit and publish. This is one of those, but it didn’t really turn out too well.
For starters, my camera battery went flat a few minutes after walking in the door. This left me with much less footage I could use, so in fact I had to use low quality shots anyway. And because there was so much movement, the compression isn’t too good either, so the file is quite big.
I look at Josh Leo’s videos and his production quality is so high, it’s amazing. So the question is whether I want to spend the time to get to that level, or just pump out a lot of rawer footage. I’ll continue to play.
