The Internet is our culture, the Archive a permanent record, and media sites like Google Images and Flickr a snapshot of the now.
I chose this song, Franco Unamerican by NoFX, because I was into it last year, and not particularly for political means. The images are taken from Google Images, the highest ranked result for each word in the lyrics, except in the three bridges where there’s no lyrics. For these I used two refactored images which are included elsewhere in the video in their original state, and a short montage of Dubya.
The song is a product of the culture of the U.S. left in 2004, which in turn builds upon and influences this culture, in a self perpetuating loop. The images are simply snapshots of this culture, a fingerprint of the song, and of culture itself.
This video is part of a larger project involving snapshots of culture.
Solar powered lights, the water, and the end of a journey.
This is the last video from my trip to Melbourne by motorcycle, and at this point I felt I was at weird turning point in my life. About to start working from home, living alone for the first time in my long life, and about to start several projects outside my traditional comfort zone.
A lot has happened in my life since this video, and it’s probably about time I started to capture it…
