It has been two weeks since I last spoke about Ourmedia, and while I was able to at least upload content in the intervening period, the problems with user accounts are still there.
I’ve had a pretty full on week, so I haven’t logged in for several days, so my Ourmedia cookies have expired. No problem, I’ll just login again. Well, seems like my password is no longer working. No problem, I’ll just click on the new forgotten my password hyperlink, and get it emailed to me. OK, enter account name, no problem, enter email address, yep, click on submit… “Account doesn’t exist.” What?!
So here I am now with no account on Ourmedia. I cannot understand why these fools cannot get these most basic of web operations to work. It is user account and password maintenance, the mainstay of every web site which provides personalised or customised content for users, the most basic of operations required by any of the millions of bloggers out there. And it’s not like they can’t figure out how to code it, because the lame arsed CMS platform they’re using, Drupal, just like the hundreds of other CMS platforms out there, actually has a user account module. It’s a damn API for fuck’s sake!
So many times I’ve tried to get on the Ourmedia bandwagon, so many times I’ve given them the benefit of the doubt, but this glorified front end to Internet Archive, needs some serious professional work done before it deserves any sort of praise or support. Sure, citizen media, blah de blah, free hosting, blah de blah. I’m drinking the Kool Aid, but just make it work first.
Instead of running around bragging about how great Ourmedia is, how super amazing Drupal is, and how anyone else entering the same business is “welcome to our space”, how about fixing the problems?
And before I get all these comments defending them, and saying that I’m out of line and not recognising their efforts, I’ve designed and written this kind of stuff myself in the past, and I’ve done a ton of work in the microcontent space that’s way ahead of what these guys are trying to do, so I believe that makes me qualified to bitch.
